Development Committee
Committee Purpose:
The Development Committee plays a vital role in advancing the mission of our organization by identifying, evaluating, and supporting opportunities for land acquisition and property development. This committee helps guide strategic decisions that enable the construction of quality, affordable housing for low- and moderate- income families. The committee works closely with staff and other key stakeholders to ensure development efforts are mission-aligned, financially feasible, and sustainable.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and evaluate potential sites for acquisition and development
- Assist in due diligence, including zoning, environmental review, and title research
- Support feasibility analysis for proposed developments (financial, legal, and logistical)
- Provide guidance on development timelines, budgets, and design
- Assist with securing pre-development funding and partnerships
- Build and leverage relationships with local government, planners, developers, and community stakeholders
- Advise on construction methods, contractors, and project management best practices
- Ensure that development projects align with the organization’s mission, values, and affordability goals
Desired Skills and Experience:
We welcome volunteers from a range of professional backgrounds. Ideal candidates bring one or more of the following skillsets:
- Real Estate Development – experience with housing development, project management, land acquisition, or construction
- Urban Planning or Architecture – understanding of site planning, zoning codes, community design, and permitting
- Finance and Budgeting – skills in cost estimation, funding strategies, pro forma modeling, or affordable housing finance
- Legal Expertise – experience with real estate law, land use, contracts, or property transactions
- Community Engagement – ability to connect with residents, facilitate inclusive planning processes, and advocate for housing equity
- Local Government or Policy Knowledge – understanding of municipal processes, affordable housing policies, and public-private partnerships
- Environmental/Engineering Knowledge – insight into land suitability, sustainability, infrastructure, and environmental assessments
Time Commitment:
The committee typically meets monthly, with additional time as needed for site visits, proposal reviews, or special projects. Volunteers should be able to commit to active participation and collaborative teamwork.
